An 82-year-old man died Friday morning after crashing his motorcycle into a tree in Lakeland.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that around 12:30 a.m., they received a call from a resident on Fitzgerald Road who heard the crash.

According to deputies, the 82-year-old rider was operating his 2005 Honda motorcycle east on Fitzgerald and was approaching the intersection of Francis Pipkin Road when the bike left the road, for unknown reasons, and drove into the front yard of a home before crashing into a large oak tree.

The man was ejected from the bike and died at the scene.

Deputies said he was not wearing a helmet.
