96-year-old driver hits, kills pedestrian in Lake County parking lot, trooper say

A 96-year-old woman backing out of a parking space struck and killed an 80-year-old woman with her vehicle in Lake County on Wednesday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Trooper said the crash happened at Potters Court and Lakeview Terrace Drive in the Altoona area around 2:24 p.m.

According to a crash report, a Ford Edge was parked in a parking lot on Potters Court, west of Lakeview Terrace Drive.

At the same time, a pedestrian – identified as an 80-year-old Altoona woman – was walking in the parking lot in a southeastern direction behind the Ford.

Troopers said the Ford’s driver – identified as a 96-year-old Altoona woman – began to reverse east out of the parking lot and did not see the pedestrian.

As a result, the back of the Ford struck the pedestrian. The victim was airlifted to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital and later pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV was not injured and remained at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
