Suspected drunk driver hits 100 mph in Charlotte County chase, crashes into trooper

A high-speed chase on I-75 North last Tuesday ended with a dramatic arrest after Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers say an extremely intoxicated man led them on a dangerous pursuit through Charlotte County.

The suspect, identified as KR, was reportedly driving recklessly and speeding when troopers attempted to pull him over. Instead of stopping, R accelerated, reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour.

R’s attempt to escape escalated when troopers tried to use a pit maneuver to end the chase. Officials say R deliberately crashed into one of the patrol vehicles in an effort to avoid being stopped. Despite losing a tire, he continued driving.

The pursuit finally ended when Reardon exited at Tucker’s Grade in Punta Gorda. Troopers conducted a second pit maneuver, pushing his truck into the grass.

R’s arrest affidavit said he was so intoxicated he couldn’t walk on his own. His BAC was 0.152. Troopers had to physically support him during the arrest. Inside his vehicle, they discovered six empty liquor bottles, four full bottles, marijuana cigarettes, and drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrest, R was taken to a hospital to be medically cleared. While there, troopers said he shoved a pill bottle into his rectum.

R now faces several serious charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing, DUI with property damage, reckless driving, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Charlotte County Jail.
