After a bad crash in Hernando County, an automatic crash detection notification from one patient’s cell phone may have prevented a tragic ending.

Hernando County Fire Rescue said crews responded after getting a crash detection alert and arrived to find two cars with heavy damage.

The collision happened at around 1:18 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Mudron Street and Grand Avenue, HFR said.

One person was unresponsive and trapped inside the vehicle and needed to be extricated by first responders. The patient was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

There was no additional information released about the condition of the other driver or the cause of the crash.
