A crash early Saturday on State Road 44 near DeLand killed a 17-year-old girl and left four other people with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 4:10 a.m. near Tomahawk Trail, involving a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and a 2015 Dodge Charger sedan, troopers said.
According to an FHP crash report, the pickup truck was traveling eastbound on S.R. 44 while the sedan traveled westbound. The front right of the pickup truck struck the front right of the sedan, the report states.
The Charger was being driven by an 18-year-old Fruitland Park man with three passengers, described as two 17-year-old Leesburg girls and another 18-year-old man from Fruitland Park, troopers said. The girl who was riding as the sedan’s front right passenger died at the scene of the crash while the Charger’s three other occupants suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized, the report states.
The 43-year-old DeLand man driving the pickup truck was hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, according to FHP.
Troopers are still investigating the circumstances that led up to the crash.
All lanes of S.R. 44 were closed in the area until around 11:30 a.m., according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
