British vacationer tries to drown relative during argument at Davenport resort: sheriff

A British man on vacation in Polk County is facing attempted murder charges after the sheriff’s office said he tried to drown his daughter-in-law.

MG, 62, of Beaconsfield, England, was vacationing with his family at the Solterra Resort in Davenport over the weekend.

Sunday afternoon, while they were in the swimming pool at their rental home, an argument began between him and his 33-year-old daughter-in-law about his grandchildren.

The argument turned violent when he started trying to force the victim’s head under the water and hold her down. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said he repeated the attack multiple times, and the victim’s 9-year-old daughter jumped in the pool to try and stop Gibbon.

A pair of sisters visiting from Ohio noticed the commotion and the victim stated G only stopped when the sisters said they called law enforcement.

“It’s great that Polk County draws visitors from all across the world, but we expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us, just as we expect our lifelong residents to do the same,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. “Because Mr. G couldn’t control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.”

G was arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery.
