Months after a man was struck and killed while crossing a Fort Lauderdale street, the driver allegedly responsible has been arrested.
BG, 19, was arrested Monday on DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges in the Dec. 27, 2024 crash, records showed.
According to an arrest report, G was driving a 2017 silver Ford Focus westbound in the 1000 block of East Sunrise Boulevard near Northeast 10th Avenue at around 4 a.m. at the same time the victim was walking in a crosswalk.
The victim was struck by the Focus and slid over 300 feet from the area of impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Focus had extensive damage to the hood, windshield, roof and rear window that was “consistent with the vehicle striking a pedestrian at an excessive speed,” the report said.
G told officers who responded that he was driving when “some homeless guy ran out in front of me and I hit him,” the report said.
He also said he was going about 55 mph and denied having anything to drink, the report said.
But the Focus’ event data recorder showed it was going about 83 mph in an area where the speed limit is 35 mph, the report said.
A DUI unit sergeant also noted G had bloodshot watery eyes and an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath, the report said.
According to the report, a search warrant was obtained for a blood sample from G that came back positive for ethanol and THC.
G’s blood alcohol content at 8:32 a.m., about four and a half hours after the crash, was .127, well over Florida’s legal limit of .08, the report said.
A sample taken at 9:52 a.m., more than 5.5 hours after the crash, was .097, the report said.
The victim’s name was redacted from the report but it said he was a flight attendant for American Airlines and was attending school to become an airline pilot.
G was booked into jail, and records showed his bond was set at $75,000.
