A 24-year-old Atmore man was seriously injured in a head-on collision in Escambia County Thursday morning after falling asleep at the wheel, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 8 a.m. at Pine Barren Rd. and Hanks Rd.

According to FHP, a Toyota SUV was southbound on Pine Barren Rd near the intersection with Hanks Road, while the 24-year-old man was driving his sedan northbound on Pine Barren Rd.

“The driver of the Hyundai was fatigued and fell asleep while driving, crossing the center line into the southbound lane of travel,” FHP says. “As a result, the front of the Hyundai collided with the front of the Toyota SUV.”

The Toyota came to a final rest along the western shoulder of Pine Barren Rd. The Hyundai rotated and overturned, coming to a final rest on its roof along the eastern shoulder of Pine Barren Rd.

The 24-year-old man was transported by LifeFlight to a trauma center. The driver of the Toyota — a 30-year-old Century woman — suffered minor injuries.
