Child accidentally shot in Jacksonville after accessing unsecured gun

A child was accidentally shot after gaining access to an unsecured gun on Thursday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened on Lem Turner Road near Capper Road.

The officer found the child suffering from a gunshot wound. The child was taken to the hospital and is currently recovering.

JSO did not provide the child’s age or condition.

JSO also issued a reminder that these types of incidents are preventable.

“We can’t stress this enough: please protect your children by securing your firearms. If you own a gun, keep it out of reach from children. Your JSO offers free gun locks at all six of our substations so you can safely store your gun.”
