Two pets have died after a blaze erupted in a Southwest Miami-Dade home’s garage and spread to an adjacent home, officials said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units said they were dispatched to the 26200 block of Southwest 154th Avenue following reports of a garage fire, at around 7:40 a.m. on Thursday.
Officials said the fire quickly escalated and spread to two vehicles parked inside, before partially consuming the adjacent home.
After a search of the property, a dog was found, rescued and reunited with its waiting family members. Two other pets were also found, but they would not survive the fire, according to officials.
7Skyforce hovered above the scene, where the roof of the garage caved in and the side of the home appears to be torched from the flames.
The fire was brought under control, and crews remained at the scene to monitor hotspots.
The homeowner spoke to 7News off camera and said he has no idea what caused the fire, but that they were all asleep inside the home when the fire broke out, and he’s thankful the damage wasn’t worse.
Area resident Ornelio Cabello told 7News in Spanish that he mourns the loss of the family pets.
“They burned. The boy in the T-shirt told me. How sad, because they are animals that have a desire to live, but well, that’s life, unfortunately,” he said in Spanish.
Cabello said he ran out to see if the owner of the property wanted help saving the animals.
“He told me that he couldn’t, it’s not right. I told him, ‘If you want, I can go back.’ He told me, ‘No,’” he said in Spanish.
No other injuries were reported, though it’s unclear if the home is still habitable.
A torched SUV was seen being hauled away by a tow truck.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
