2 people hit by car, thrown into mangroves near Fort Myers Beach

Two people are injured after being hit by a car and thrown into mangroves near Fort Myers Beach on Thursday afternoon.

According to Fire Chief Scott Wirth, a car was driving along San Carlos Boulevard near Beach Pottery, Etc when it hit two pedestrians, throwing them into a group of mangrove trees around 1 p.m.

The Fort Myers Beach Fire Department crew had to cut their way into the mangroves to rescue the two pedestrians. They were then transported by Lee County Emergency Medical Services as trauma alerts, said Wirth.

The car also ended up crashing into the mangroves, but the driver refused any FMBFD medical treatment or transport.

The cause of the crash has not yet been released.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
