2 injured after fire ignites home along Oyster Shell Drive on North Captiva Island

Massive flames and a plume of smoke could be seen billowing from a home on North Captiva Island on Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the house fire that was reported shortly before 1:30 p.m. along Oyster Shell Drive.

According to the Upper Captiva Fire Commissioner, the two-story, three-bedroom house was destroyed. The commissioner also told Gulf Coast News that there were three people inside, and one person walked out.

Two people were rescued by firefighters and airlifted to Sarasota’s wound center for advanced treatment. Several others were treated on-scene for minor smoke inhalation and released.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire started at ground level, erupting from a golf cart stored under the wood-frame home.

Upper Captive Fire and Rescue District posted the following on its Facebook page:

“Good evening island residents we had a structure fire. I believe my crew did an outstanding job rescuing two people out of a pool and getting them the care they needed. Then turning around and putting out the immense fire. We had firefighters from all of the county here assisting us. I am so grateful for their assistance. I am sure y’all have questions I have answers for you so we will have a small get together in the next week and if you would like to ask a question or have some input on how we run our operation I welcome you. We do have our commissioner meeting this Friday and I will be here so if you would like to join us we can chat after the meeting but we need to stay on topic at the meeting. I encourage each of you to remove golf carts from under your home. Do not leave the cart on the charger unattended. Please do not use lithium batteries. I know I have said this a lot but I am trying to prevent this from ever happening again. I care about each of you.
