A Port Charlotte man was arrested after deputies said he attacked a couple outside of Publix with bug spray when they wouldn’t let him skip in front of them in the checkout line.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Publix around 2 p.m. on Sunday after receiving a call about a physical altercation.
Deputies said the incident began inside the store when DK, 65, became upset at the couple while in the checkout line.
An investigation revealed that the woman was waiting for her husband in line when K approached and tried to get in front of her.
The woman told K that she was in line, which upset him, deputies said.
The victims began placing their items on the checkout belt, and K began to do the same, furthering the argument.
According to the CCSO, the husband stepped between his wife and K and told him to back off.
K left his cart and items and ran out of the store.
According to deputies, once K was outside of the store, he moved his vehicle to the other side of the parking lot and positioned himself to commit the attack.
The couple exited the store and began loading their groceries into the car when K ran up behind them and sprayed them both in the face with bug spray before running away and leaving the scene.
“This is a disgusting and cowardly act, and over what? Who checks out first at the grocery store? The level that this man took it to was dangerous and completely unnecessary. Please- when frustrations inevitably occur in life, take a moment to ask yourself, ‘Is this worth it?’. More often than not, you will find the answer is no,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said.
The man required medical treatment and was taken to a local hospital.
Deputies located K nearby, where he was identified by the victims and refused to discuss the incident with deputies.
K was placed under arrest on two counts of aggravated battery with great bodily harm.
