The Ocala Police Department arrested a woman who left her three young children unattended in her apartment. The children were later rescued after a neighboring unit caught on fire.
MG, 33, is being charged with child neglect without bodily harm.
Ocala Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at Laurel Park Apartments early Wednesday morning after a resident reported smoke coming from a nearby unit.
Firefighters say they found smoke coming from the front second-floor window of a two-story unit and confirmed there was no one inside.
Residents, including the three children who were sleeping next door, were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
Officers say the children were alone in the apartment for more than two hours before the fire began around 4:20 a.m.
G did not return until around 6:30 a.m. after being called by a sergeant.
The source of the fire was identified as a lithium-ion battery from an electric scooter, which spread to nearby items. Firefighters quickly put out the fire with a water can.
