A bar tab dispute at a local establishment ended in violence on Aug. 31, leaving the owner shaken and one man facing attempted murder charges.
Police say JR was arrested after allegedly stabbing another man during an argument outside Grumpy’s Underground.
Investigators said the fight began when friends of the victim believed they were overcharged for drinks. Although a manager resolved the tab issue, R allegedly continued shouting at the victim, challenging him to fight.
Amanda Fields, the bar’s owner, said R — known to staff as “Saucy” — was not a longtime employee but was still in training. She said he had only worked two training shifts and was filling in because she wasn’t feeling well that night.
Fields said she told everyone involved to leave, including R. But police say the confrontation spilled outside, where the victim punched R before feeling “two quick hits” to his back. The victim later realized he had been stabbed and recalled hearing R say, “I got him.”
Fields said she believed the situation had ended earlier and was shocked to learn it had escalated behind her bar. She said she feels bad about what happened and believes she did everything she could to stop it.
R has been charged with second-degree attempted murder.
