A 16-year-old student from Bonita Springs High School was attacked by classmates near his school bus stop on Michigan and Connecticut on Thursday afternoon, leading to an investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office’s violent crimes unit.
JS, the victim, said, “I saw cars, like, circle going around. And then, someone called me over, and I recognized who it was, so I just went to him. We talked, and he just basically kind of told me, like, why was I talking bad about him? And I said, I was not talking bad about him. He’s like, yes, you were.”
The incident was recorded on a cellphone. The video shows a student punching S in the face, grabbing him, and throwing him against a car. Another student knocked him down on the concrete, punching him in the face several times, while others cheered.
“No, no one called 911. They were just standing there and just like watching everything happen,” S said.
S tried to get back up but was pushed to the ground again.
“One of the people was my friend, was friends with them, or we became friends when we were like 1 year old,” S said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported that the students took off S’s shoes and ripped his AirPods out of his ears and threw them in the grass.
S said, “I try to get everyone off of me. But there was so many people.”
After the attackers finished, S ran home, and his parents called 911, taking him to the hospital for a check-up.
“I had to go to the hospital because I also had a brain surgery because my head got moved when I was a kid as well. So, my parents were mostly worried about my head because they did hit my head,” S said.
“The thing that’s really hurting is my leg. I do play a sport, which is soccer, so. And it’s the leg I usually kick with. So, it may affect me and my own games. I’m just hoping I can, like, recover it soon because I am going to have a game,” S said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said that no arrests have been made yet, and their violent crimes unit is investigating by interviewing witnesses and following leads.
The Lee County Public School District announced it will not discipline the students involved because the incident occurred off school property.
S said he is afraid to return to school.
“I didn’t go to school today. We did talk to the principal, and they told us that it was better if I didn’t go to school today because they were there. All of them were there. So, they told me not to go today, and I think we’re going to, hopefully, on Monday. Everything would calm down,” S said.
UPDATE
The school district released a statement about the incident:
“The School District of Lee County is aware of the incident. Law enforcement is handling the investigation since it occurred off campus and after school hours. If felony charges are filed, the school can pursue disciplinary action. The school has developed a safety plan for the student during school hours and at school events.”
