Multiple people were hurt after an explosion at a clubhouse on a golf course in Stuart on Wednesday.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), five people were injured — three seriously — all of whom were workers at the building under construction. The sheriff’s office says two of the workers were flown to a burn unit in Orlando and another was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The other two are believed to have drove themselves to a nearby hospital.

Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) said crews responded to reports of an explosion at 3535 SW Kanner Highway around 2 p.m.

At the scene, crews found three men with severe burns following what MCFR said appears to have been a vapor explosion that occurred while workers were relighting pilot lights.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek says plumbers and golf course workers were testing the stove at the time of the blast.

“They thought that they had bled the line; they thought there were no fumes in the room, but they used an ignition source to test it and unfortunately there was a sizable amount of some type of gas – don’t know what kind of gas – in that room and there was an explosion,” he said. “It ignited, lots of fire and flames, and it put itself out so there was no fire to fight when our rescue crews arrived there.”

Two men were flown to a regional burn center, and one was transported by ground to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.

OSHA has taken over the investigation because it is a work-related incident, to determine what happened.
