A man was arrested on Monday afternoon following an hourslong hostage standoff, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
M.A.V., 49, is accused of assaulting a man he held captive the night prior, before holding a 74-year-old woman hostage on Monday after deputies attempted to arrest him for failing to register as a sex offender, Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon said.
At 5:45 p.m., V surrendered to deputies without incident.
“I’m happy to report we had a peaceful resolution, and nobody got hurt,” Blackmon said.
Just before noon, the Osceola Sheriff’s Office received a call about the situation at The Heritage Park Inn on Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said two men got into a physical altercation in a room when one threatened the other.
According to the sheriff’s office, V is accused of physically restraining a 52-year-old man by binding his hands and feet in a chair the night before, where he later assaulted him repeatedly and cut him with a knife.
“He convinced the suspect to release him today,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “He then fled the room and called 911 from the lobby of the Heritage Park Inn. He was treated and released from Osceola Regional Hospital, with visible injuries.”
After the initial victim left the room, V allegedly took a female hostage, the sheriff’s office said.
“Hostage negotiators worked for over five hours to de-escalate the situation,” said the sheriff’s office. “The suspect requested a pizza and a wheelchair for the [74-year-old woman]. Both items were delivered to the front of the room.”
What followed next was the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, along with assistance from the Orange County SWAT.
“A Long-range acoustic device was used to coerce the suspect to surrender,” said the sheriff’s office. “This device emits an amplified sound to reach the suspect. The message was directed to the suspect to surrender. After several minutes, Mr. V opened the door, and the woman was helped into the wheelchair as Mr. V surrendered to deputies without incident.”
V was booked into the Osceola County Jail.
