8-year-old hit by car while getting off school bus in Tampa: police

An 8-year-old boy was hit by a car while getting off a school bus Friday afternoon, Tampa police said.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of East Yukon Street and Greenwood Avenue, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Authorities said the driver of a black Lexus sedan tried to pass the stopped school bus just as its stoplights were deploying.

The driver struck the child, knocking him to the ground and causing him to hit his head on the pavement, according to officials.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, and police said, “fortunately, his injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.”

The driver of the Lexus stayed at the scene and was cited for failing to stop for a school bus.
