Lee County deputies arrested a man accused of stealing alcohol and tobacco products from a gas station in Estero, then nearly crashing near a nearby school while trying to get away.
It happened Wednesday afternoon at the Mobil gas station off Corkscrew Commons Drive, just east of I-75. Deputies say 21-year-old JE stole three cans of Twisted Tea and a sleeve of Zyn tobacco from the store, then pushed past a clerk before running out and driving off.
Witnesses told deputies they saw E speeding through the parking lot of Celebree School while students were still inside. Deputies found him minutes later inside his car at the school, allegedly trying to leave the scene.
The sheriff’s office says E smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and showed signs of intoxication. His breath test later showed a blood alcohol content of 0.158, nearly twice the legal limit.
Investigators say security footage confirmed E’ actions inside the store. He was taken to the Lee County Jail and faces charges including theft, battery, resisting arrest and DUI.
