An undocumented man’s dash for freedom ended with an ICE detainer and bite-sized consequences.
On Friday night, deputies with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) say they conducted a traffic stop on a car near Clearlake Road and Reid Street in
According to deputies, both occupants of the car provided Guatemalan IDs, with one, Eduardo Barrios-Mendez, reportedly hinting at his immigration status by making a run for it.
Initially, deputies say they lost sight of Barrio-Mendez in a wooded area, but luckily, four-legged help had arrived. K-9 Richie was deployed and found Barrios-Mendez in a well-vegetated ditch as the suspect reportedly screamed for mercy.
Both Barrios-Mendez and his passenger, Wuilmar Diaz-Gonzalez, ended up in the same jail — though one arrived unscathed, and the other with a few extra bite marks.
Officials say Barrios-Mendez was booked for resisting without violence, and Diaz-Gonzalez was booked for operating a vehicle without a license.
Both were placed on an ICE detainer and turned over to jail until they are transported by Customs and Border Patrol to their country of origin.
