A man was arrested Tuesday after Tampa police said he stole a fire truck and then crashed it in a hit-and-run.
The Tampa Police Department said 59-year-old Warren Scudder stole the fire engine while firefighters were inside St. Joseph’s Hospital around 9:25 a.m.
Scudder drove away and then crashed into a gray Lexus SUV near Dr. King Boulevard and MacDill Avenue, officers said.
The driver of the Lexus was taken to a hospital after the crash.
At 9:38 a.m., officers found the stolen fire truck and blocked it in the 4100 block of Poplar Avenue.
Scudder was then taken into custody.
He was charged with grand theft auto and a hit-and-run. Additional charges may be pending.
The Tampa Fire Rescue said no Tampa Fire Rescue personnel were injured, and no serious injuries were reported due to the incident.
“The safety of our crews, our patients, and the community is always our top priority,” said Tampa Fire Rescue Fire Chief Barbara Tripp. “We are thankful for the quick action of the Tampa Police Department.”
The investigation is ongoing.
