Deputy shoots suspect, rescues child in Brandon domestic incident: HCSO

A man is dead after Hillsborough County Sheriff deputies said he was holding his seven-year-old brother in a chokehold with a knife.

According to the sheriff’s office, around 2 p.m., deputies responded to a call regarding an ongoing domestic violence incident.

Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer said the suspect’s sister letting them know that 27-year-old MC was cutting her, causing her to bleed from her mouth.

She then advised deputies that he took their seven-year-old brother to a bedroom.

“What the decedent did— her brother took her younger brother, who was seven-years old, and took him in a back bedroom with the knife and was holding him against his will for lack of a better term, he was a hostage in his own house,” Chief Deputy Maurer said. “

Body-worn camera video shows C had barricaded himself with his brother the bedroom with the door locked.

Camacho refused commands from deputies to make himself known and release the child.

The child then tells deputies to break down the door and deputies then proceed to do so and kick the door open.

Deputies said they encountered C, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet and two tactical vests with ballistic plates inside the bedroom holding a knife and refusing to let go of the child.

According to the sheriff’s office, one of the deputies, 25-year-old AG, fired one shot at C, who fell to the ground, allowing the rescue of the 7-year-old victim.

“If our deputies did not take that action, there’s no doubt in my mind that that boy is not here tonight,” Maurer said.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office said that G had been with HCSO for nearly six years, five as a Detention Deputy and 11 months as a Law Enforcement Deputy.

Deputy G has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the completion of the investigation, the agency said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation which remains ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
