Bicyclist struck by semi on US-41 was hit by another vehicle seconds later, FHP says

The Florida Highway Patrol said that a bicyclist who was struck by a semi-tractor on US-41 last week was struck just thirty seconds later by another vehicle, which then fled the scene.

The crash happened at around 6:45 p.m. on Nov. 11 in the northbound lanes of US-41 approaching 24th Avenue South.

The bicyclist, who was not in a marked crosswalk, attempted to cross multiple lanes of traffic and was struck by the passing Volvo semi-tractor. The driver of the semi, a 53-year-old Tampa man, pulled over and turned his hazards on, seemingly waiting for law enforcement to arrive.

When FHP initially reported on the crash, it only included information about the collision with the truck and said the bicyclist, a 49-year-old Brandon man, died of his injuries at the scene.

A few days later, FHP announced that the man was actually struck a second time around thirty seconds later, this time by a large, dark-colored pickup truck. The case was then shifted to a fatal hit-and-run investigation.

In a video released by the agency, the pickup truck appears to momentarily brake after running the victim over, but doesn’t stop.
