Driver arrested, accused of hitting deputy while leaving Port Charlotte church

KT, a 77-year-old woman, was arrested by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, accused of hitting a deputy with her car while leaving New Day Christian Church and driving away.

Deputies were directing traffic at the intersection of Peachland Boulevard and Veronica Street in Port Charlotte on Sunday morning to keep drivers and pedestrians safe after church services.

Sheryl Fulks, a neighbor, said, “I’m not surprised at all.”

She described the area as chaotic, noting, “It’s absolute chaos here. I’ve seen people go flying by the cops trying to direct traffic all the time.”

The deputy involved in the incident reported that he instructed T to drive straight, but she took a left turn instead.

“I’ve heard the cops numerous times yelling at people, but they just ignore them,” Fulks said.

Investigators stated that T’s side mirror hit the deputy’s hand hard enough to cause a burning sensation. T continued driving without checking on the deputy’s condition.

She was quickly apprehended by deputies and taken to the Charlotte County Jail. T now faces charges of hit and run with injury and failure to obey law enforcement.

If convicted of the hit and run, she could face up to five years in prison and fines up to $5,000.

Fortunately, the deputy was not seriously injured.
