25-year-old woman hit, killed while trying to cross U.S. 301 in Manatee County: Florida Highway Patrol

A pedestrian was hit and killed by a driver while trying to cross U.S. 301 in Manatee County Wednesday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The incident happened just after 10:30 p.m. as the pedestrian, a 25-year-old woman from Palmetto, was walking north on the left shoulder of the highway, according to troopers.

Authorities said the woman tried to cross the highway just south of 63rd Avenue East and walked in front of a Lincoln sedan that had been traveling north in the left lane of U.S. 301.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The driver of the sedan, an 80-year-old from Bradenton, was not injured.

Damage could be seen to the left front of the sedan, with part of the windshield shattered and the bumper hanging on the ground. Authorities temporarily had the roadway blocked off.

Troopers were still investigating the crash Thursday morning, and no further information was immediately available.
