A driver was accused of rear-ending a car that had stopped behind a school bus letting children off along 23rd Street Southwest near Yvonne Avenue in April.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, investigators identified the driver as 18-year-old JL, who they say was behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla with only a learner’s permit.
After the rear-end collision, he was accused of fleeing down 23rd St. SW and striking several mailboxes as he drove away, according to deputies.
Neighbors say the area is notorious for frequent crashes, happening “every week or two,” according to resident Georgina Acosta, who blames distracted driving and young drivers texting behind the wheel.
Acosta wasn’t home during the crash but says incidents like this unfold regularly in front of her house. Her mailbox has been hit and damaged multiple times over the years.
Homeowners reported the damage, and deputies said L had previously been involved in another hit-and-run on the same street that sent a driver to the hospital.
Months after the April crash, deputies arrested L on a felony warrant. He was taken into custody Tuesday at his Lehigh Acres high school and booked into the Lee County Jail.
