A man was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition Saturday night after he crashed into a Winter Haven firetruck, a spokesperson for the city said.
The truck was returning to the fire station after responding to a call on Overlook Drive. As the truck was turning left onto Dundee Road, with a green light, it was struck by another car.
The Mercedes that hit it was traveling east on Dundee Road, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the driver may have been impaired and speeding.
Three firefighters in the truck were not injured and immediately began working to extricate the driver from the severely damaged car. The man, not yet identified by authorities, was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries, but is now reported to be in stable condition, PCSO said.
Another vehicle was involved in the crash, and a photo from the scene shows a black sedan with damage to the driver’s side. That driver was not injured.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing, but charges against the driver of the Mercedes are anticipated.
