A 25-year-old woman is dead after a truck crashed in Cocoa Village on Friday, according to the Cocoa Police Department.
Police said a 64-year-old man driving the 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 suffered a medical emergency, leading to the fatal accident that killed the 25-year-old woman and injured another man on Brevard Avenue.
Amy Matthews, a shopper who witnessed the incident, described the scene, saying, “They were doing CPR on her they had to pull her out.”
The crash, which occurred at 1 p.m., was witnessed by dozens of people.
Matthews said, “We made it about 20 feet. We heard a crash. We looked back and we saw that happen and it was just emotional because it could have been us. My daughters riding on her scooter and yeah.”
Witnesses said the truck clipped the sidewalk and struck the pedestrians, and ultimately crashed into the Cocoa Village Playhouse.
“It’s devastating. It’s devastating. We are a very tight-knit community. It’s very, very tragic,” said Diana Lynn, a local business owner.
Officers and Cocoa Fire Rescue responded to the scene and found the female unresponsive on the ground.
She was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The male pedestrian accompanying her refused medical treatment.
The driver was taken to a local hospital.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s usually very safe and unfortunately these things happen,” Lynn said.
Brevard Avenue remains closed between SR-520 and Harrison Street while traffic homicide investigators continue to document the scene.
