A fiery single-car crash killed a 20-year-old man Saturday night, with a 20-year-old woman narrowly escaping the flames thanks to a good Samaritan.

According to deputies with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the driver, who has not been identified, was killed after losing control of his car while speeding and crashing into a tree on Sea Branch Boulevard near U.S. 1.

The driver was taken to the hospital, but deputies say he succumbed to his injuries Sunday morning.

As for the passenger, she was able to escape the fully engulfed vehicle thanks to a brave passerby. She was subsequently flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, where she continues to recover in the ICU.

The deadly crash marks the third death of a young person in Martin County in two days, following Friday’s violent crash in Hobe Sound.

“This marks a somber start to the new year on our roadways,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a post to Facebook. “The Martin County Sheriff’s Office urges all drivers—especially younger drivers—to slow down and remain attentive at all times, particularly during nighttime hours.”
