A Sarasota County family returned from dinner Friday evening to find a car had crashed directly into their home on Gulf Gate Drive while they were out.
The homeowners were alerted by a neighbor who called to tell them a car had slammed into their house. Debris and shattered glass were scattered across the front of the home when they arrived, with pieces of the car littering the driveway.
“At this point I wasn’t sure if it was a home invasion or a drunk driver,” said homeowner Larry Wilson, noting how difficult it would be for a car to reach the front door without impairment.
The driver fled the scene before officers arrived, according to police.
Wilson estimates the damage could cost tens of thousands of dollars. The front door was boarded up Tuesday afternoon as repairs began.
Wilson said he’s most grateful no one inside was hurt, especially his dog, who typically stays near the front door.
“Everything in the house is replaceable,” Wilson said. “My pets are not.”
Authorities believe surveillance video shows the vehicle involved: a white 2015 Chevy Trax. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for the driver.
