A suspect has been arrested in the hit-and-run in Fort Lauderdale earlier this week that left a grandfather dead, police said Friday.
TLM, 25, was arrested Thursday on charges including leaving the scene of a crash involving death, Fort Lauderdale Police officials said.
The victim, 70-year-old Johnnie Lee Davis, was struck and killed around 8 p.m. Monday on West Sunrise Boulevard near Northwest 5th Avenue, police said.
Surveillance video showed Davis being struck by a vehicle, which police said was a white Dodge Ram truck, before he’s launched down the street.
Police said an “intense investigation” led to the arrest of M, who also faces charges of driving with a suspended license and tampering with evidence.
“Fort Lauderdale Police Department remains committed to ensuring justice in this case and extends its deepest condolences to the family of Johnnie Lee Davis during this difficult time,” the department said in a statement.
M was booked into jail and appeared before a judge on Friday, where attorneys mentioned he gave a confession to detectives that he was driving the car.
His bond was set at $76,000 and if he posts it, he’ll have to wear a GPS monitor and won’t be allowed to drive.
A prosecutor also discussed his prior criminal history that includes grand theft, aggravated fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license.
Davis’ daughter spoke Monday night about losing her father.
“He’s of life and love, and I don’t understand how someone can hit my father and run like that. I just want justice for my father, and I wish someone would come forward. I just lost my mom November 6th. I’m very hurt,” Jazzlynn Simmons said.
Simmons spoke again on Friday after the arrest was made, saying it’s a step closer to justice.
“I just want them to know I lost my best friend and I had a really good father and I no longer have that. It eases some of the pain knowing the guy is incarcerated but the pain is still there,” she said.
