Boyfriend allegedly strangles woman for refusing to give his phone back

A Summerfield man was arrested after allegedly strangling his girlfriend for going through his phone when she got a text from his ex.

Officers responded to a battery involving 25-year-old ZDK and his girlfriend of six months at an undisclosed residence around 6:45 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

Upon arrival, they met with the girlfriend as K left the scene in a black sedan. He was later stopped in the Fruitland Park Plaza, located at 3335 U.S. Hwy. 441, Fruitland Park, where he refused to talk, the report said.

Meanwhile, the girlfriend told officers that she had woken up from a nap and saw a text on her phone from Ki’s ex-girlfriend. She then woke him up and asked to see his texts. While she was reviewing them, he asked that she give him the phone back, the report said.

She refused, at which time he got extremely agitated and jumped on top of her. She pushed him off, and he fell to the ground. He responded by saying he wanted to hit her, verbally arguing with her and getting in her face, the report said.

To create distance, the girlfriend shoved K. He proceeded to put both his hands around the front of her neck and choke her. He restricted her airflow, making her unable to breath. He also punched her three times on each side of her face and once on her lower lip before slamming her head into a wall, the report said.

She sustained redness and swelling on her face and lip, consistent with her story. Her statements ended with K gathering his things and leaving the residence, the report said.

A subsequent check of K’s criminal history revealed he had one prior battery conviction on Feb. 15, 2022, in Marion County, the report said.

K was arrested on charges of battery by strangulation in dating relationship and simple battery (one prior conviction). He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $12,500.
