NORTH PORT, Fla. —
SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. — A 71-year-old Navarre woman died in a crash involving a school bus in Santa Rosa County on Wednesday afternoon.
The crash caused a shutdown of both eastbound lanes of Highway 98 (Navarre Parkway) at Sunrise Drive, creating traffic delays in the area.
Family members spoke to WEAR News and identified the crash victim.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 1:43 p.m. The 71-year-old was driving a Chevrolet and approaching stopped traffic.
A school bus carrying 21 Woodlawn Middle School students was in front of the 71-year-old driver as she approached. Troopers say she didn’t stop in time, crashing into the backside of the bus.
FHP says the 71-year-old was pronounced dead on scene. The Santa Rosa County School District confirmed the safety of all children. Counselors will be available to them on Thursday for mental health support.
The county says both eastbound lanes of Highway 98 at Sunrise Drive have now reopened.
