Driver hospitalized after car crashes into side of home near Fort Lauderdale

A woman was hospitalized after she crashed her car into a home near Fort Lauderdale.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue responded to the home at 2905 Northwest 13th Street, Thursday afternoon.

7Skyforce hovered over the home, showing the SUV crashed into the side of the home. Debris was scattered all around the yard.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the female driver suffering from a leg injury and bleeding. Crews extricated the woman and transported her to Broward Health Fort Lauderdale with non-life-threatening.

Five people who were inside the home at the time of the crash were evacuated. They are all unharmed.

The American Red Cross has also been notified to provide assistance to the affected residents.

Homeowner Goldie Pitts told 7News she wasn’t at home at the time of the crash, but described the moments she arrived to find the car parked inside her den.

“I come home and I saw the car in my house and I just hopped out of the car and started running and asking what had happened,” she said.

She said her niece and other family members were home and she was unsure if they had been hurt.

“My niece was here. I didn’t know if she had gotten hurt or what had happened,” she said.

She said she’s heartbroken watching her home destroyed. She’s lived in this home since 1982.

But she’s thankful her family wasn’t hurt.

“A miracle, a miracle,” she said.

Witnesses say they heard a loud boom that prompted them to run out of their house to see what had occurred.

“It sounded like thunder,” said Al.

“I was in my house with friends and we heard a big boom,” said a male neighbor. “There was a lady in the car so me and my friend, we all ran to help. I tried to pull the door open. One of my friends called the police. One of my other friends tried to get help from the workers.”

Another witness said he saw the female driver start her car and then lost control of her vehicle, causing her to crash into the home.

“She came out easy, normal but when she got straight, for some odd reason, she hit the gas all the way and was swerving. Lost control and got straight into there,” said a man.

On Thursday afternoon, the car was towed away.

Hours later, 7News cameras captured plywood being installed to cover the gaping home on the side of the home.

The home has been deemed unsafe to live in, so the family is finding a place to spend the night.

It’s unclear what led to the crash.
