A Florida woman found herself in a frightening situation after her vehicle drove off a runway and into a retention pond on Sunday.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says a little after 9 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a phone call from a frantic woman who said she had lost control of her vehicle, causing it to enter a retention pond at 70th and Hartford Street. The driver had found herself trapped in the vehicle as it rapidly began to fill with water.
“Do you need police, fire or medical?” the dispatcher can be heard asking over the phone.
The woman is heard on the phone, telling the dispatcher she needs both and that she was in the lake.
“I’m going to drown. I don’t know how to swim,” the woman says. “It’s filling up with water.”
The sheriff’s office says deputies arrived within minutes and immediately entered the water. HCSO says deputies broke the window and pulled the driver through a submerged vehicle, bringing her to shore.
Body camera released by HCSO shows deputies rushing to the scene and using a yellow rope to hoist the woman out of the water.
The woman sustained minor injuries and her vehicle was removed from the retention pond.
