A driver smashed into a construction truck on State Road 574 early Wednesday morning, leaving two workers with serious injuries.
The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in an active work zone on the highway, just west of Bismark Plam Drive in Hillsborough County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Authorities said the two construction workers, a 20-year-old and 36-year-old, were inside their truck with the caution lights activated when a GMC Yukon, being driven by a 37-year-old Tampa man, crashed into them.
Troopers said the Tampa man had been trying to overtake the construction truck just before the crash. Photos showed heavy damage to the front end of the man’s SUV, along with a flashing arrow on the construction truck indicating for drivers to move over.
The two construction workers were taken to a nearby hospital. There was no further word on their conditions as of Wednesday night.
The Tampa driver suffered minor injuries and was cited for careless driving, according to the FHP.
