A 20-year-old college student returning home for Mother’s Day was seriously injured in a crash on Saturday after one of his car’s tires blew off, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The man was traveling west on State Route 570 (Polk Parkway) at around 12:45 p.m. and was approaching the Braddock Road overpass when the front right tire of his Toyota Camry blew out.
FHP said his car, which was in the inside lane, veered right across the outside lane and off the road. He then collided with the retaining wall at the overpass, causing an estimated $10,000 in damage to the structure.
The force of the collision caused the car to start spinning clockwise before rolling over and coming to a final rest on its side.
Witnesses also reported seeing smoke coming from the front tire just moments before the crash, FHP said.
The driver suffered “incapacitating” injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
