Springfield daycare worker charged with child abuse; infant’s skull fractured

A Springfield daycare worker was arrested on Thursday for aggravated child abuse after she allegedly repeatedly slammed a 3-month-old infant into his crib and changing table.

According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Gulf Coast Hospital after staff reported an infant had arrived with significant and suspicious injuries.

It was reported that medical staff observed swelling on the back of the infant’s head consistent with a skull fracture, along with extensive bruising to the face, ear and forehead.

Deputies reported that a CT scan later confirmed the infant had sustained multiple skull fractures and a fractured leg. The infant also suffered rib fractures and a brain bleed.

An investigation was launched to determine how the infant sustained the injuries. It was determined that the infant was allegedly not injured before being dropped off at Quality Learning Child Care Center, Inc., located on School Ave.

Deputies reported that the injuries occurred while the infant was in the sole care of H, who was assigned to supervise the infants.

It was reported that during an initial interview, H denied knowing how the infant was injured. However, in a later interview, H allegedly admitted to investigators that she had “spazzed out” on the infant.

Investigators said H confessed to feeling upset upon arriving at work due to personal issues. She reportedly received an additional text message at work that made her angry and she directed her anger toward the infant.

H allegedly admitted to repeatedly slamming the child into his crib, slamming him onto a changing table, striking him in the head with toys, squeezing him, and shaking him in an attempt to stop him from crying. She then abused the infant again in the same manner later in the day.

H was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse. She was transported to the Bay County Jail.

Deputies said they believe that if the child’s parents had not sought immediate medical treatment, the injuries could have resulted in the infant’s death.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
