Thick, black smoke permeated the air Monday evening as crews battled a massive fire that began at a junkyard in Opa-locka.
The blaze broke out just after 5 p.m., with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue receiving reports of multiple vehicles on fire at the junkyard located off Cario Lane.
Officials said the fire spread to three nearby businesses, and windy conditions were making it difficult for crews to contain the blaze.
More than 80 units had responded to the scene by Monday night, and efforts to extinguish the fire were ongoing.
There had not been any injuries reported as of Monday night.
Firefighters said smoky conditions would likely last through the night and encouraged those in the area to remain indoors with their windows closed.
“We ask the public to avoid the area so first responders can work safely,” the fire department said. “If you must drive near the area, intermittent road closures are possible. Please remain alert and follow all traffic directions.”
The cause of the fire remained unclear Monday.
