Two people were “conscious and breathing” after the small plane they were in crashed near North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines on Friday, authorities said.
The crash happened on the grounds of South Florida State Hospital at 800 E. Cypress Drive, just west of the airport.
Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed the damaged plane completely flipped over on a grassy area just feet away from some buildings.
Two people were on board the plane, a Cessna C172P, when it crashed shortly after departing North Perry at around 11:30 a.m., Federal Aviation Administration officials said.
The Broward County Aviation Department said in a statement that the plane crashed landed on a grassy area on the hospital grounds.
Pembroke Pines Police said all occupants of the plane were “conscious and breathing,” and there were no additional injuries reported.
The cause of the crash was unknown but the FAA is investigating.
The Broward County Aviation Department said in a statement that “safety is a top priority at (North Perry Airport),” and that the aviation facility passed its Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) annual inspection earlier this month for the 26th year in a row.
“While the County will not speculate as to the cause or causes of this accident, we will be cooperating with the authorities as they conduct their investigation,” the statement read.
