A man was arrested in Collier County on Monday after being accused of drunk driving, speeding and crashing into a car with a baby inside.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, shortly before midnight on Sunday, a deputy was parked along the turn lane of Golden Gate Boulevard West when they saw a lifted Jeep Wrangler approaching at a high speed. The deputy’s radar tracked the Jeep as traveling at 95 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The deputy then began a pursuit of the Jeep and pulled it over at the intersection of Golden Gate Boulevard and Collier Boulevard. The driver of the Jeep was identified as D, who told the deputy he was leaving a friend’s house and traveling to Miami, the report said.
While speaking with D, the deputy noticed a strong scent of alcohol, the report said. The deputy then saw that D’s eyes were bloodshot and watery and that his pants were completely soaked with a liquid that Dsaid was water.
The deputy then asked D to perform standard field sobriety exercises, which he did and failed, the report said. The deputy then began a DUI investigation and found two open Corona beer cans in the rear of D’s Jeep.
As the deputy was conducting the DUI investigation, they received a report of a hit-and-run crash that had occurred minutes before D was stopped. The victim told deputies that a black vehicle had crashed into the rear passenger side of their vehicle, where a baby was.
The victim told deputies the vehicle did not stop and continued driving away from the area. Deputies had the victim conduct a show-up, and the victim positively identified D’s Jeep as the vehicle that had crashed into them, the report said.
D was arrested and faces charges of DUI damage to property or person, driving 50+ mph over the speed limit, refusal to submit to DUI testing and hit-and-run.
