2-year-old girl dies after Gainesville mother beat her

On Thursday, Alachua County deputies responded to a medical emergency, believing a 2-year-old girl to be unresponsive. Deputies learned a Gainesville mother had beaten and stomped on her daughter until she began seizing. The girl succumbed to her injuries Sunday afternoon.

Over the past three days, medical staff worked to save the girls’ life. When the toddler was first brought to the hospital, medical staff noted skull fractures and bruises to the head, chest and back.

A witness told deputies the child’s mother, W, 29, and her daughter had been staying at their house for about two weeks. Thursday night, W woke the friend up and handed her the unresponsive toddler, and the witness began CPR.

W reportedly told her friend that she beat the child. During an interview with detectives, W reportedly claimed the toddler wasn’t listening. She admitted to beating the victim with a belt, punching the child, and stomping on the toddler’s back. W told deputies she knew she “went too far.”

W is now charged second degree murder. She remains in the Alachua County Jail without bond.
