A 61-year-old Michigan man was arrested for drunk driving after he allegedly crashed his vehicle into a mobile home in Fruitland Park and fled to a neighboring lot.
Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported hit-and-run crash at about 8:05 p.m. Monday, June 15, at a mobile home park located at 4059 Picciola Road.
Upon arrival, a deputy spoke with a witness who stated he heard a loud “boom” that shook his girlfriend’s trailer home. When the man went outside to investigate, he saw H of Prescott, Mich., backing his 2008 Buick Lucerne into the trailer. The witness described H as wearing blue and yellow swim trunks and no shirt.
The witness stated he and H exchanged words following the collision, but he was unable to understand H due to his heavily slurred speech. H then drove away and parked at an adjacent lot.
A second deputy located H at the neighboring lot, where he was found sitting in the front passenger seat of his Buick. During an interview, H admitted to backing his vehicle into the trailer. The deputy noted that H’s speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, he was sweating profusely, and he emitted a strong odor of alcohol.
H, who holds a Michigan driver’s license, admitted to drinking but claimed he went inside his residence, consumed several shots of alcohol, and then returned to his vehicle after the crash. However, the witness had already reported to deputies that H’s speech was slurred immediately following the collision.
H refused to participate in standardized field sobriety exercises, citing multiple health conditions. He required assistance from both the deputy and the car door just to stand up and exit the vehicle.
H was arrested and booked at the Lake County Jail, where he provided two breath samples registering .096 and .092 blood alcohol content. He was released after posting a $2,000 bond.
