Florida’s Turnpike shut down at Mile Marker 240 southbound after a fatal crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Both the driver and the passenger in the single vehicle involved have died, FHP said.

Troopers said an SUV was travelling southbound on the Turnpike when it ran off the roadway and struck the inside lane’s concrete barrier.

The vehicle overturned, and the driver was ejected, troopers said.

The driver was airlifted to the hospital, where they later died. The passenger was pronounced dead on the scene.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

The crash remains under investigation.

Police urge drivers to proceed with caution near first responders.

A law enforcement vehicle was on its way to the scene and was involved in a separate crash. There were no injuries involved in this crash that happened on the northbound side, FHP said.
