Man, 30, killed in head-on crash on SR-40 in Volusia County

A 30-year-old man from Astor was killed in a head-on crash Wednesday morning that shut down a portion of State Road 40 in Volusia County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. on SR-40 west of Check Station Road in Pierson.

Troopers said the 30-year-old was driving a 2004 Buick Rendezvous eastbound on SR-40 when, for reasons under investigation, the SUV traveled off the right side of the roadway onto the shoulder.

Investigators said the driver then overcorrected, crossing into the westbound lanes and into the path of an oncoming 2017 Ford F-350 hauling a trailer.

The front of the Buick collided head-on with the front of the Ford.

The 30-year-old man from Astor was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ford, a 19-year-old man, later drove himself to a local hospital. His passenger, a 39-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash is under investigation.
