A driver was arrested after Hillsborough deputies said he tried to switch seats with a passenger during a traffic stop and ended up crashing into a patrol car.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said it was conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of North Florida Avenue and West Country Club Drive on Wednesday.

During the traffic stop, the driver, who deputies identified as A, 30, tried to switch seats with his passenger but left the vehicle in reverse.

The car rolled backward into the deputy’s patrol vehicle.

A video from the sheriff’s office showed A get out of the vehicle shortly after the crash and walk away.

He ran off into a wooded area but was located and taken into custody.

A was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.

“Trying to avoid responsibility only makes matters worse,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “If you choose to flee or deceive deputies, expect to face the consequences. In Hillsborough County, we will hold you accountable for your actions.”
