Two impaired drivers were arrested in separate incidents in Port St. Lucie over the past several days, including one driver accused of battering a police officer during a DUI investigation.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department said officers first arrested 25-year-old M after he was seen weaving between lanes after leaving a local establishment. During the investigation, officers determined M had been drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel.
M was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence. Authorities said he later provided a breath sample with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.120, above Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.
In a separate incident, officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle that struck a city median. Investigators said the driver, identified as 24-year-old A showed signs of impairment.
According to police, A provided a breath sample measuring 0.232, nearly three times the legal limit. During the investigation, she allegedly made physical contact with an officer and was additionally charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
Police said both incidents ended without serious injuries but emphasized that impaired driving can have deadly consequences.
“I’m okay to drive” is one of the most dangerous decisions a person can make, the department said in a social media post.
The department urged anyone who has been drinking to make alternate transportation arrangements, such as calling a friend or using a rideshare service, rather than getting behind the wheel.
Port St. Lucie police said officers will continue efforts to identify and remove impaired and aggressive drivers from local roadways, while encouraging residents to make responsible choices before driving.
“One good decision before you drive can save a life,” the department said.
