A 38-year-old Lakeland man died after a head-on crash on State Road 62 at Saffold Road Monday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 8:59 a.m., FHP said. The man, driving a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Silverado was traveling west on State Road 62, west of Saffold Road, when it crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, FHP said.

A 2014 Peterbilt, driven by a 56-year-old Mulberry man, was traveling east in the eastbound lane at the time, according to FHP.

The front left of the Silverado collided with the front left of the Peterbilt, FHP said.

The Silverado was redirected off the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. The Lakeland man was ejected from the vehicle, according to FHP.

The Peterbilt was also redirected off the roadway, came to rest in a ditch and became engulfed in flames, FHP said.

The Peterbilt’s driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, according to FHP.
