The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a driver who troopers said sped off after crashing into another vehicle and leaving three young Myakka City children severely injured.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22 on Verna Bethany Road in Manatee County, according to investigators.

A 33-year-old Myakka City man was heading south with three young children and a 34-year-old woman in his van when officials said another vehicle drove directly into his path.

The Myakka City man veered left in an attempt to avoid the other driver, but in doing so, troopers said he traveled off the roadway and struck a wooden power pole, causing the van to overturn onto its roof.

Witnesses told investigators that the other driver, who appeared to be in a dark blue SUV, briefly stopped before rapidly accelerating away from the scene. According to troopers, the suspect vehicle may have also had tinted windows.

Three of the children in the van, a 1-year-old boy and two girls, ages 3 and 4, sustained serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital. As of March 6, officials said the 4-year-old girl was still hospitalized.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the unknown driver who caused the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol (*FHP) or Crimestoppers.
